ver the past three decades, Workscape has continued to evolve alongside the changing needs of our clients and the design industry. While our services, spaces, and partnerships have grown, our commitment to thoughtful design and strong relationships has remained the same.

In 1996, dial-up internet was everywhere, the Steelers were at Three Rivers Stadium, and Workscape was just getting started as Pittsburgh’s Knoll dealer. Ergonomic seating was just beginning to enter the mainstream workplace conversation.

It was also the year Workscape became Pittsburgh’s Knoll dealer, the beginning of a 30-year journey shaped by relationships, evolving workplaces, and a passion for thoughtful design.

Workscape was founded in 1996 by Dawn and Dave Sauter with a vision to help organizations create better work environments. Starting with just six employees in a small office in Pittsburgh’s West End neighborhood, Workscape began building the foundation for what would become a trusted design partner throughout the region.

In the early years, Workscape continued to grow, expanding into a larger space on Lowe Street while refining our brand and establishing ourselves within the Pittsburgh design community.

A quick timeline of milestones:

In 2007, Workscape became the exclusive DIRTT distributor for Western Pennsylvania, adding architectural solutions and flexible wall systems to our portfolio and expanding the ways we could support clients.

By 2010, Workscape was recognized as one of the Pittsburgh Business Times’ Fastest Growing Companies for the third consecutive year, reflecting the continued growth of our team and our partnerships.

In 2011, Workscape became officially certified as a Women-Owned Business Enterprise (WBE), reinforcing our commitment to leadership, diversity, and opportunity within our industry.

Dawn and Dave Sauter began transitioning the business to the next generation of women-led leadership while continuing to play an integral role in Workscape’s success in 2019.

In 2020, Workscape expanded its reach with a second location in Morgantown, West Virginia, strengthening our ability to serve clients throughout the region.

In 2021, Workscape celebrated 25 years in business, king a quarter century of partnerships, projects, and growth.

The past several years have brought some of the biggest changes in Workscape’s history. Following the merger of Herman Miller and Knoll to create MillerKnoll, Workscape continued its long-standing partnership with the newly formed design leader, expanding our ability to provide innovative workplace solutions.

Workscape also welcomed a new chapter with the move into our South Side showroom, creating a premier destination for clients, designers, and partners to experience furniture, architectural products, technology solutions, and workplace inspiration firsthand.

With the acquisition of Continental Office’s Pennsylvania operations, Workscape expanded its team and resources while becoming the exclusive MillerKnoll dealer in the region. This milestone strengthened our ability to serve organizations across Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia with an even broader range of expertise.

In 2024, Workscape was again ranked one of the Fastest Growing Business by the Pittsburgh Business Times, this time at #17.

Celebrating 30 Years Together

To celebrate this milestone, the Workscape team spent a day together at Kennywood, creating new memories while reflecting on the journey that brought us here. The celebration was a reminder that Workscape’s greatest strength has always been its people.

From our first employees in 1996 to the team we have today, every person who has been part of Workscape has contributed to our story.

As we celebrate 30 years, we are grateful for the clients, partners, and community members who have trusted us along the way. We look forward to continuing to create spaces that inspire, support, and connect people for years to come.
