Elevating Space with Scale

here are moments in a project where material, scale, and craftsmanship come together to create something truly memorable. Our recent timber slat installation at Nova Place is one of those moments.

Spanning two full floors in the entrance lobby, this feature wall immediately draws the eye upward. Composed of 4” x 8” timber posts reaching an impressive 29.5 feet tall, the installation introduces warmth, rhythm, and a strong architectural presence to the space. It’s a striking example of how natural materials, when thoughtfully applied, can transform an environment without overwhelming it.

While the final result feels seamless, getting there requires careful coordination and expertise. Workscape's construction team collaborated closely with Design Group and Faros to bring the vision for the space to life, utilizing a detailed and coordinated approach throughout the process. The installation, executed by Workscape and JC Shultz, demanded precision at every stage—from coordination with the existing concrete slabs to the installation of the new staircase to alignment and spacing within the opening of the lobby. At this scale, even the smallest detail matters, and the craftsmanship is evident in every vertical line.

A key component of this project is the use of DIRTT Timber, a system that merges the warmth of wood with the intelligence of prefabricated construction. Unlike traditional millwork, DIRTT Timber is designed and manufactured off-site using a highly controlled, digital process. It can be used in so many ways and is made to suit your project’s needs exactly, every single time. This approach allows for a level of accuracy and consistency that’s difficult to achieve with conventional methods, especially on large-scale installations like this one.

Using DIRTT’s ICE® software, Workscape’s design team can model each element of the timber system in real time, refining dimensions, spacing, and connections before anything is built. This digital integration not only streamlines coordination between teams, but also reduces uncertainty during installation. What’s designed is exactly what’s delivered.

Off-site fabrication also plays a major role in efficiency and sustainability. By manufacturing components in a controlled environment, material waste is minimized and quality is maintained throughout the process. Once on-site, the installation becomes faster and more predictable, reducing disruption and keeping projects on schedule.

In this case, that precision was essential. Installing nearly 30-foot vertical timber elements across two floors requires not only careful planning, but absolute confidence in how each piece will fit and perform. DIRTT Timber provides that confidence, allowing teams to focus on execution rather than adjustment.

Beyond the technical advantages, the end result speaks to something more experiential. These vertical slats create a sense of movement and continuity, guiding visitors through the space while softening the scale of the lobby.  This project is a reminder that impactful design doesn’t always rely on complexity. Sometimes, it’s about taking a simple material, elevating it through thoughtful design, and executing it with precision.

We’re proud to have been part of bringing this installation to life and to continue exploring how innovative systems like DIRTT Timber can shape spaces in meaningful ways.
