he University of Pittsburgh’s Hillman Library has been a cornerstone of campus life for decades, and now, after more than seven years of phased renovations, it has reopened with a fresh identity for a new generation of students.
This ambitious project reimagines what a library can be in the digital age. Where stacks of printed materials once filled the space, students now find open areas designed for collaboration, creation, and connection. By reshaping Hillman into a hub of innovation and interaction, Pitt has ensured that the library remains not only relevant but essential for decades to come.
The transformation was completed in four phases, with the final stage wrapping up in spring 2025. Throughout the process, the building has been overhauled to connect students with both digital resources and the expertise of Pitt’s librarians. Each stage of the renovation has unlocked new opportunities for flexible study, teamwork, and modern learning.
Workscape was proud to play a part in this journey, partnering with GBBN and Pitt to furnish spaces that balance comfort with functionality. From inviting lounges to collaborative work zones, every detail was chosen to reflect the way students study and connect today.

A wide range of manufacturers contributed to the refreshed look and feel of Hillman Library, including, but not limited to, Herman Miller, Knoll, Muuto, and Naughtone. Together, these brands helped shape spaces that are as inspiring as they are functional.
Hillman’s renewal isn’t just a physical update — it’s a vision for the future of libraries. With spaces that invite people in and encourage both independent and group learning, Hillman has been transformed into a people magnet, a place where knowledge, community, and creativity thrive side by side.
